Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and granulated sugar. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Add egg and combine. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, cook diced apples with brown sugar and cinnamon until soft (5–7 minutes). Cool slightly.
  3. Roll out chilled dough to 1/8-inch thickness and cut into circles (5 inches in diameter).
  4. Place about 1 tablespoon of apple filling on one half of each circle, fold over, sealing edges tightly.
  5. Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry each pie until golden brown (about 2 minutes per side). Drain on paper towels.
  6. In a small saucepan, melt the remaining butter over medium heat until browned; stir in maple syrup and powdered sugar until smooth.
  7. Drizzle glaze over warm pies before serving.
