Instructions

How to Make Smothered Steak and Gravy

  • Generously season the round steak with salt and pepper. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sear the steak for about 3 minutes per side until it’s beautifully browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside.
  • In the same skillet, add your sliced onions and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn translucent and fragrant.
  • Pour in the low-sodium beef broth and Worcestershire sauce into the skillet. Let it simmer while scraping up those tasty browned bits from the bottom of the pan to infuse the gravy with extra flavor.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a little water until smooth. Add this slurry to the simmering gravy, stirring continuously for about 2 minutes or until the gravy thickens to your liking.
  • Place your seared steak back into the skillet and spoon the gravy over it. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  • Dish the steak onto plates, generously topping it with the savory gravy. Pair it with creamy mashed potatoes or your favorite roasted vegetables.

Notes
