Instructions

How to Make Spiced Hot Cross Buns

  • In a small bowl, combine instant yeast with warm water. Allow it to foam for about 5-10 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, mix Greek yogurt, honey, and vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the foamed yeast and stir gently.
  • In another bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes.
  • Fold the raisins or currants into the dough, ensuring they're distributed evenly.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm area for about 1-2 hours.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough lightly, divide into equal portions, and shape into rolls.
  • Cover the shaped buns and allow them to rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  • Mix a small amount of flour with water to create a thick paste for piping crosses.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake buns for 20-25 minutes.
  • Brush the warm buns with honey glaze after baking.
